Abstract

Petroleum hydrocarbons are desulphurized by autofining using a catalyst, having a particle size not exceeding 7/32 inch, comprising the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum supported on alumina gel. The catalyst may contain a small proportion, e.g. 2.5-6 per cent, of combined fluorine. The autofining process may be carried out at a temperature of 780 DEG F., equilibrium pressure, a space velocity of 2 v./v./hr., and a recycle rate of 2000 SCF/B. Petroleum distillates boiling above the kerosine boiling range, e.g. gas oil, may be treated.
