Abstract

A catalyst especially suitable for the hydrocatalytic desulphurization of petroleum oils is prepared by passing a fluorine compound into a fluidized bed of oxides of cobalt and molybdenum supported on activated alumina at an elevated temperature so that fluorine is introduced into the catalyst. In an example the bed is fluidized at 780 DEG F. by cycling hydrogen and then tertiary butyl fluoride is introduced into the recycle gas. Alternatively, hydrogen fluoride may be used as the fluorine compound. For autofining, the catalyst advantageously contains 2.5-6 per cent by weight of fluorine. Specification 719,627 is referred to.
