Abstract

Isobutene-oxygen mixtures in gaseous phase are reacted at elevated temperature to produce methacrolein in the presence of a catalyst comprising an oxide of Bi and V. Additionally the catalyst may contain P. The gaseous mixture, if desired diluted with an inert gas, may be passed through a fixed or fluidised catalyst bed at 300-800 DEG C. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier. Additional catalyst ingredients are one or more oxides of Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, Cr and As. Examples are given. Specification 950,686 is referred to.ALSO:In a process for the preparation of methacrolein from a gaseous mixture of isobutene and oxygen at elevated temperature there is used a catalyst comprising Bi and V in oxide form. Additionally the catalyst may contain an oxide of P. Other oxides which may be pesent are one or more of Ti, Mu, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr and As. The catalyst may be supported on silica gel, alumina, SiC, clay, pumice, aluminium phosphate, or boron phosphate. Examples are given. Specification 950,686 is referred to.
