Abstract

1369475 Methanol synthesis catalysts MITSUBISHI GAS-CHEMICAL CO Inc 20 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 59149/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Catalyst for use in the synthesis of methanol from hydrogen and carbon oxide(s) is prepared by a procedure wherein basic copper carbonate, basic zinc carbonate and chromium trioxide are mixed, in the presence of water, in relative amounts to provide a mixture having a Cu:Zn:Cr atomic ratio of 10-90:5-70:2-70, which mixture is dried, calcined in air or inert gas, for instance nitrogen, at a temperature of from 200 to 400‹C until gaseous decomposition products can no longer be detected and subjected to reducing treatment, for example by heating in a reducing atmosphere, for instance comprising hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide, at a temperature of from 200 to 300‹C for a period of from 3 to 50 hours. The amount of water used may be substantially equal to the total weight of the basic copper carbonate, basic zinc carbonate and chromium trioxide. The basic copper carbonate; basic zinc carbonate and chromium trioxide may be all mixed simultaneously or any two of such materials may be mixed and the remaining material mixed with the resulting mixture, for example basic zinc carbonate may be added to a mixture of basic copper carbonate and chromium trioxide; as exemplified, aqueous chromium trioxide solution is added to a mixture prepared from basic copper carbonate, basic zinc carbonate and water.
