Abstract

1,217,717. Formaldehyde. BADISCHE ANILIN. & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 5 June, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 26685/68. Heading C2C. A process for the production of formaldehyde in the gas phase by reaction of methanol with oxygen, in the presence or absence of steam, at temperatures of from 600-800‹ C. in contact with silver crystals arranged as a two-layer catalyst, the lower layer consisting of coarser particles than the upper layer, wherein the lower layer has a thickness of from 15-40 mm. and at least 50% of the crystals have particle sizes from 1À0 to 4À0 mm., and the upper layer has a thickness of 0À75 to 3À0 mm. and consists of crystals having particle sizes of from 0À1 to 0À9 mm., and wherein this catalyst is loaded with 1À5 to 3 metric tons of methanol per square metre of the cross-section of the catalyst bed per hour. Preferably, the catalyst loading is 2 to 3 metric tons of methanol per square metre of the catalyst bed per hour, and the process is carried out at a temperature of 650-750‹ C. The catalyst bed is suitably at least 0À5 metre in diameter. An oxygen methanol molar ratio of 0À3: 0À6 and a methanol conversion of 90- 97% are preferred. If the reaction is performed in the presence of steam then a 40-70% aqueous solution of methanol may be used.
