Abstract

3-Alkyl-buten-1-al cpds. of formula (H)x-CH2-a-C(CH2R)-a-CR(H)y-CHO (where each R is H or an aliphatic residue; one bond a is a double bond and the other a single bond between the adjacent C atoms; x and y are 1 or 0 depending on which a link is a double bond) or prepd. by oxidn. of the corresp. -CH2OH cpds. The alkenol is oxidised with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst of total thickness 5-35 mm and having >=2 Ag crystals and/or of Cu one part of the layers contains 10-50% of the catalyst as 0.75-2.5 mm particles; the other 50-90% of the catalyst as 0.2-0.75 mm particles. The process is simpler, cheap, gives a practically quantitative yield, gives a high space-time yield, a purer product and a longer catalyst life.
