Abstract

Methacrylonitrile is prepared by contacting a gaseous mixture of isobutylene, molecular oxygen and ammonia with a catalyst comprising oxides of antimony, molybdenum and bismuth, optionally with an oxide of phosphorus, said catalyst corresponding to the empirical formula PnSbaMobBic wherein n has the value 0 to 12, a + b + c = 22, a has the value 0.5 to 20, b has the value 1 to 18, c has the value 0.5 to 11 and c=4.4 + b. The catalyst may contain a silica carrier or may be admixed with porcelain or metallic rings. The catalyst may be employed in the form of a fluidized bed and a secondary source of molecular oxygen may be added to the reaction zone. Specifications 867,438 and 874,593 are referred to.ALSO:A catalyst composition for use in the vapour phase production of methacrylonitrile from isobutylene comprises a mixture of oxides of antimony, molybdenum and bismuth, optionally with further amounts of oxides of phosphorus, represented by the empirical formula PnSbaMobBic, wherein n=0 to 12, a+b+c=22, a=0,5 to 20, b=1 to 18, c=0,5 to 11, and c\sE4,4+b. The catalyst may also be admixed or chemically combined with a silica carrier, or supported on diatomaceous earth. Specifications 867,438, 874,593 and 1,000580 are referred to.
