Abstract

Pyromellitic dianhydride is made by gas phase oxidation of 1,2,4,5-tetraalkylbenzenes in presence of a catalyst containing V2O5 and at least one oxide of Ti, W or Sn.ALSO:Catalysts for oxidising tetraalkylbenzenes comprise V2O5 and an oxide of Ti, W or Sn. Exemplified catalysts consist of 100 parts SiC, as carrier, with a mixture of 9 parts V2O5 and 3 parts TiO2, WO3 or SnO2. Other specified carriers are pumice, quartz and Al2O3.
