[Also in Division C5] Maleic anhydride is prepared by a process in which a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having 4 carbon atoms in the molecule or an unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having 4 or 5 carbon atoms in the molecule is oxidized by a gas containing free oxygen at a temperature in the range 200-550‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising an oxide of molybdenum and at least one other oxide which is an oxide of tin, antimony, titanium, iron or tungsten. The catalyst may also contain an acidic oxide such as phosphorus or boron oxides.
