Maleic anhydride is prepared by a process in which butene-2 or an unsaturated hydrocarbon containing five carbon atoms in the molecule is oxidized by a gas containing free oxygen at a temperature in the range 200-550‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst containing a molybdenum oxide, e.g. a molybdate, and in the presence of steam.
