Abstract
a ,b -unsaturated monocarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting an a -mono-olefinic hydrocarbon (less than 8 C) in the vapour phase with an oxygen-containing gas at between 370-485 DEG C. in a bed of a bismuth promoted cobaltmolybdate catalyst wherein the atomic ratio of bismuth : molybdenum is in the range 0.05 to 0.15. Propylene and isobutylene are converted to mixtures containing acrylic and methacrylic acid respectively with aldehyde by-products, and examples are described. A cobalt to bismuth ratio of 9:1 is preferred and the preparation of the catalyst is also described.ALSO:A bismuth-promoted cobalt molybdate catalyst wherein the atomic ratio bismuth-molybdenum is in the range 0.05 to 0.15 is used in an oxidation process. The catalyst is prepared by mixing bismuth molybdate with cobalt molybdate, or by adding a bismuth salt solution to a cobalt salt solution and treating the mixture with ammonium molybdate, followed by drying and calcining. A cobalt to bismuth ratio of from 9:1 is preferred.
