Abstract
a ,b -Unsaturated monocarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting a -mono-olefinic hydrocarbons (with less than 8 C atoms) in the vapour phase in a first reactor with an oxygen-containing gas at 370 DEG to 510 DEG C. in the presence of steam and a catalyst comprising bismuth and molybdenum oxides, quenching the effluent to 120 DEG to 340 DEG C., and passing it directly to a second reactor containing a catalyst comprising cobalt oxide, molybdenum oxide and bismuth oxide, with an atomic ratio C0:Mo of 1:1 or less at 340 DEG to 480 DEG C. The oxidation of propylene and isobutylene and mixtures containing them are preferred and air may be the oxidizing gas. Examples describe the oxidation of propylene to acrylic acid with acrolein as a by-product.ALSO:In a two stage oxidation process olefinic hydrocarbons are oxidised in a first reactor with a catalyst comprising bismuth and molybdenum oxides at between 120 DEG and 340 DEG C, followed by a second reactor with a catalyst comprising cobalt oxide, molybdenum oxide and bismuth oxide with an atomic ratio of CO:Mo of 1:1 or less at between 340 and 480 DEG C. The catalyst in the first reactor may be supported on alumina or silica gel and in an example silica gel is impregnated by a solution of bismuth nitrate and molybdosilicic acid. The catalyst for the second reactor may be prepared by mixing the respective oxides and calcining, or by coprecipitating a solution of a bismuth salt and a cobalt salt with ammonium molybdate, the latter method being exemplified.
