Abstract

A catalyst composition for oxidizing CH3OH to HCHO consists of MoO3 and Fe2O3 in the molar ratio of from 3-8, the composition having a specific surface of from about 4 to about 15 sq. m./gm. and a pore volume of from about 0,15-0,60 ml./gm. During its manufacture the composition may contain pore forming acids such as NH4NO3, cellulose powder, and graphite which are subsequently removed by ignition. Examples describe the preparation of catalyst compositions as above using specified salts of Fe and Mo at critical pH of solutions, and subsequent tableting of the product.ALSO:CH3OH is oxidised to H.CHO in the presence of a Fe2O3, MoO3 catalyst which has a molar ratio of MoO3/Fe2O3 of from 3 to 8, a specific surface of from 4-15 square metres per gram and a pore volume of from 0.15-0.6 millilitres per gram. Examples describe the use of the catalyst to fill reactors through which methanol air mixtures are passed at 270-400 DEG C., 260-428 DEG C. and 363-401 DEG C.
