Abstract

1334100 Monothioalkylene glycols BAYER AG 29 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 60320/71 Heading C2C A thioalkylene glycol is produced from the corresponding alkylene oxide and H 2 S by mixing these ingredients either (i) in a continuous process in a molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:1À2 or (ii) in a discontinuous process in the molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:1À7, and allowing the alkylene oxide and H 2 S to react at 20-100‹ C. while stirring the mixture with a tubular stirrer, under a pressure of 1-15 atmospheres gauge. The reaction may proceed in a solvent, e.g. water or the product itself. In examples, (i) thioethylene glycol is produced from ethylene oxide, optionally using calcium oxide as catalyst, (ii) 1- mercapto-2-propanol is produced from 1,2- propylene oxide and (iii) 1-mercapto-3-propanol-(2) is produced from epichlorohydrin.
