Abstract

In a method of making spinel catalysts material for forming the catalyst is reduced in a powdered form at 225-250 DEG C. and after reduction is pressed into tablets. Spinel is defined as a compound of formula XO.Y2O3 where X and Y denote different di- and trivalent metals and O represents oxygen. The material to be reduced may be fluidized and reduction effected at atmospheric pressure. After reduction, graphite may be added to the reduced material to facilitate tableting. Comparative examples are given in which ZnO-Cr2O3-CuO and one or more of K2O, MgO and MnO2 are spinel constituents.
