Abstract

1,152,215. Acrotein. ROHM & HAAS CO. 19 Sept., 1966 [12 Oct., 1965 (2)], No. 41648/66. Heading C2C. Acrolein is prepared by reacting propylene with oxygen at an elevated temperature in the gas phase in the presence of water and a catalyst comprising copper molybdate, optionally in association with from 0À1 to 1À0% by weight of copper telluride based on the weight of copper molybdate. The catalyst, which may be supported on specified carriers and which may be defined as a complex of copper oxide in combination with molybdenum oxide, may be obtained. by calcining an intimate mixture of copper oxide and molybdenum oxide, obtained for example by precipitating a hydrated copper molybdate/ ammonia complex from an aqueous solution of a copper salt by treatment with ammonium molybdate. When a catalyst composition containing copper molybdate and copper telluride is used, the reaction may be allowed to proceed so that the acrolein formed is converted to acrylic acid.
