Abstract

Acrylic acid is made by reacting acrolein with molecular oxygen at elevated temperature in the vapour phase over an oxidation catalyst to give a reactor effluent containing acrylic acid and an amount of acrolein which is between 10 and 35% by weight of the acrolein originally fed to the reactor, quenching the gaseous reactions product with water or an aqueous acrylic acid solution to condense the acrylic acid and at least some of the acrolein, fractionally distilling the aqueous acrylic acid solution thus obtained to separate an overhead fraction comprising unreacted acrolein and a base product comprising aqueous acrylic acid substantially free from acrolein, and recycling the overhead acrolein fraction to the oxidation reaction. Preferred features of the process include recovering acrolein from the residual gases from the quenching stage and recirculation to the oxidation stage, for example by scrubbing with water and distilling the resultant aqueous solution to recover acrolein as an overhead fraction, or alternatively using aqueous acrylic acid as the scrubbing medium, the use as oxidation catalyst a molybdate of bismuth, cobalt, tin, vanadium, iron, antimony, cerium, titanium, nickel or tungsten. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a diluent gas, for example nitrogen or a mixture of steam and nitrogen. The invention is described with reference to drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification (not shown) and an example is given containing comparative data of operation within the limits set forth by the claims and outside the scope of the claim.
