Abstract

A carbonyl compound is prepared by reacting an olefin in the gaseous phase with molecular oxygen at a temperature below 350 DEG C. in the presence of water vapour, and of a halogen and/or a hydrogen halide, and of a catalyst comprising (a) a solid carrier, (b) a compound of a precious metal of Group VIII, (c) a compound of Fe, Co, Ni or a transition metal of Group I or VII and (d) a compound of an alkali metal having an atomic number from 11 to 55 inclusive. Olefins which may be so oxidized are ethylene, propylene, butane-1, pentene-1, butene-2, styrene, cyclopentene, butadiene, pentadiene-1 : 4 and isoprene. The products may be aldehydes, ketones or carboxylic acids. Examples comparatively describe the conversion of ethylene to acetaldehyde and acetic acid.
