Abstract

Aldehydes and ketones are produced by the oxidation of an olefine with an aqueous catalyst solution containing a compound of a metal of the platinum group and a salt of copper and/or iron, the olefine being reacted under pressure with the catalyst solution by passing the olefine in succession through two reaction vessels, fresh catalyst solution being supplied separately to each reaction vessel and the catalyst solution being regenerated by oxidation with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas. Preferably the partially reduced catalyst solution is released from pressure in a distillation column to evaporate the carbonyl compound before the solution is regenerated. Both the reaction stages and regeneration stage are normally carried out at 50-200 DEG C. and under a pressure of 2 to 50 atmospheres. A description of suitable apparatus for carrying out the process is given. An example is given of the conversion of ethylene to acetaldehyde. Specifications 876,025 and 884,962 are referred to.
