Abstract

1460971 Maleic anhydride by catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons MONSANTO CO 11 April 1974 [16 April 1973 (2)] 16261/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Maleic anhydride is produced by contacting an oxygen-containing gas and a saturated C 4 - C 10 hydrocarbon, having at least 4 carbon atoms in a straight chain or ring, at a temperature of 350‹ to 600‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst composition in which phosphorus, vanadium and one or more of Ti, Zr, Hf and Si are chemically combined with oxygen and wherein at least 50% of the vanadium is in the tetravalent state, the P/V atomic ratio is 1 : 2 to 2 : 1 and the Ti, Zr, Hf or Si to P atomic ratio is at least 0À05:1. The reaction pressure is suitably superatmospheric but may be atmospheric or subatmospheric. The feed may be technical grade hydrocarbons containing up to 25 wt. per cent of olefins or other hydrocarbon fractions. If the feed hydrocarbon contains more than 4 carbon atoms, some citraconic anhydride may be produced as by-product. The Examples describe the use of butane as feed.
