Abstract

1306087 Steam cracking FLUOR CORP and H F A TOPSOE 9 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 62652/70 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Unsaturated hydrocarbons are produced by a gaseous catalytic reaction in which a feedstock substantially comprising saturated hydrocarbons is contacted at a temperature below 1000‹ C. and a pressure of 0À1-50 atm. abs. in the presence of steam with a catalyst comprising at least one oxide of zirconium or hafnium, active alumina, at least one oxide of chromium, manganese or iron, and a compound of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, these components being present in specified quantities (see Division B1). A minor proportion of unsaturated hydrocarbons may be added to the saturated hydrocarbon feed. The reaction is suitably carried out in the presence of sulphur added to the feedstock, e.g. as free sulphur, CS 2 , H 2 S or an organic sulphur compound. The steam/feedstock weight ratio should be 0À01 : 1À0 to 10À0: 1À0. In the examples a naphtha comprising iso-pentane, n-pentane, iso-hexane, n-hexane and aromatics in specified proportions is converted to give ethylene and propylene.
