Abstract

1397315 Catalytic steam cracking HALDOR TOPSOE AS and FLUOR CORP 9 Aug 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 37858/72 Heading C5E Unsaturated hydrocarbons are prepared in a catalytic steam cracking process which comprises contacting a pre-heated vaporized saturated hydrocarbon feedstock at a temperature below 1100‹ C. and at 1-30 atmos. absolute, in the presence of 0À1-10 parts of steam per part of feedstock with a catalyst comprising zirconium and less than 2% by wt. of any metal compounds (calc. as metal) other than alkali metal compounds, wherein on alkali metal compound is added to the vaporized feedstock before contact with the catalyst in amount 0À1-500 mg. alkali metal/kg. feedstock whereby at some stage after the start of the process the catalyst contains 0À1-10 wt. per cent of an alkali metal compound, calculated as oxide. Preferably an aqueous solution containing 50-10,000 mg. potassium in the form of K 2 SO 4 /litre is injected into the vaporized feedstock. Examples described the production of ethylene and propylene from naphtha and gas oil.
