Abstract
In the production of synthesis gas comprising essentially hydrogen and carbon monoxide from fuel oils containing hydrocarbons by reaction with steam and oxygen, the oil is introduced into the reaction chamber by atomization with steam, and a catalyst is mixed with the oil prior to or during its introduction. The oxygen may be introduced separately, e.g. as air mixed with additional steam, and may be given a whirling motion to assist mixing. The amount of oxygen used may be regulated to control the reaction temperature, e.g. at 1100 DEG -1200 DEG C. The steam and oxygen are preheated, e.g. to 600-700 DEG C. The oil is heated to 100 DEG -150 DEG C. to increase fluidity and is injected together with superheated steam at a pressure of several atmospheres through nozzles having diverging jets. Suitable catalysts are salts of alkaline earth metals, e.g. calcium or magnesium nitrate in an amount of at least 1 gram per litre of oil. The catalyst is suspended in the oil or added as an aqueous solution. An example describes the reaction of heavy fuel oil with oxygen and steam. If air is used instead of oxygen, a nitrogen-containing gas suitable for the synthesis of ammonia is obtained. Reference is also made to the use of the gas for the synthesis of methanol.
