Abstract

A hydrogen/carbon monoxide synthesis gas mixture is produced by subjecting a <PICT:0672165/III/1> hydrocarbon relatively deficient in hydrogen and having a boiling point over 400 DEG F. to partial combustion at 1600-2600 DEG F. and preferably at superatmospheric pressures, with pure oxygen in an amount insufficient for complete conversion to hydrogen and carbon monoxide, separating the carbon formed and, in a succeeding step, reacting the separated carbon with pure oxygen and steam at 1600-2600 DEG F. to yield further quantities of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Suitable hydrocarbons are gas oils, heavy residuals, asphalts and coal liquified in known manner by heat, pressure or solution. In the Figure, hydrocarbon oil preheated at 18 is injected by a jet 13 together with oxygen preheated at 17 into a reaction space 19. The reaction products pass through a grate 20 to a refractory bed 23 of decreasing particle size wherein the carbon is retained, the hydrogen and carbon monoxide being removed at 25. The upper portion of the bed may be fluidised. The hydrocarbon and oxygen supply to the burner 13 are then discontinued and super-heated steam from 34 together with oxygen from 33 enter the reacter via line 31 to react with the finely divided carbon to form further quantities of product gas. Preferably dual reactors are provided as shown, each employed alternately for partial combustion of the hydrocarbon and the conversion of the separated carbon.
