Abstract
635,913. Oil gas ; water gas generation. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. May 20, 1947, No. 13595. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1946. [Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] Gas mixtures containing mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide are produced by charging liquified bituminous carbonaceous material into a fluidized bed of refractory material into which oxygen and steam are also introduced, the gaseous products being discharged into an upper part of the reaction zone to which further oxygen is supplied. A dense suspension of powdered refractory material, e.g. silica, alumina or magnesia is maintained in a fluidized state in a reaction chamber 1 by an oxygen-steam mixture admitted through a line 3 and a heavy oil tar or pitch, such as a vacuum distillation residue of the bottoms of a Venezuelan crude, heated to 200- 450‹ F. is sprayed with steam through a nozzle 7 within or above the dense phase. Carbon dioxide may be added with the steam. Partial combustion occurs at 1,500-2,000‹ F. and preferably 115-300 lb. per sq. in. pressure. Secondary oxygen supplied through a line 10 effects oxidation of lighter hydrocarbons and soot in a zone extending to the top of an enlargement la of the chamber, at temperatures up to 3,000‹ F. The ,gases pass through a waste heat boiler 17 and dust separator 22 to hydrocarbon synthesis apparatus. Refractory material is desirably supplied continuously from a hopper 40 and removed by a pipe 45 in order to remove salts and other metallic compounds present in the pitch. Gas and steam may be injected through pipes 43, 44. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the use of low grade coals, shales and less readily liquifiable material such as asphalt which may be ground and mixed with the refractory material. This may be dispensed with in the case of high ash containing fuels. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
