Abstract
Acrolein is made from a gaseous mixture of propylene and oxygen at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst containing either Bi and V or Bi, V and Pinoxide (see Division B1). The acrolein may be made in a fixed or fluidised bed process at temperatures of 300-800 DEG C. The propylene-oxygen mixtures may be diluted with an inert gas or steam. The catalyst may be supported on an inert carrier and may additionally contain one or more oxides of Ti, Mu, Fe, Co, Ni, Zu, Cd, Sn, Pb, Cr and As. Examples are given. Acitaldehyde may be a by-product. Specification 839,808 is referred to.ALSO:In a process for the preparation of acrolein by reacting in the gaseous phase and at elevated temperature, propylene and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst material comprising Bi and V or Bi, V and P in oxide form there is used more than 1 gm. atom of Bi per 3 gm. atoms of V and more than 1 gm. atom of Bi per gm. atom of P (if any). Additionally the catalyst may contain one or more oxides of Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, Cr and As. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier, e.g. SiC, pumice, silica gel, clay, aluminium phosphate, boron phosphate or alumina. Specification 839,808 is referred to.
