Abstract

Formaldehyde is produced by the oxidation of methanol with air in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal oxide in a fluidized or agitating bed, the methanol being fed into the apparatus in a concentration which lies within the explosive range which is defined as a methanol/air ratio between 6.0 and 36.5% by volume. The catalyst may be supported on an inert carrier and, for example, may be a mixture of Fe2O3 and MoO3.
