Abstract
Petroleum hydrocarbons are catalytically desulphurized by passing, without addition of hydrogen, over a catalyst consisting of the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum supported on alumina, and also containing a minor proportion of combined fluorine, at elevated temperature and pressure such that the hydrocarbons are maintained substantially in the liquid phase, and sufficient hydrogen is produced by dehydrogenation of naphthenes to convert combined sulphur into hydrogen sulphide. The catalyst may contain 0.1-6 per cent by weight of combined fluorine, added in the form of aluminium fluoride. A temperature of 700-800 DEG F., a pressure of 700-1000 p.s.i.ga. and a space velocity of 0.5-5 v./v./hr. may be used in the process. The catalyst may contain the oxides as such or in combined form. The example describes the treatment of gas oil. Specification 728,506 is disclaimed. Specifications 690,806 and 719,627 also are referred to.
