Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils containing organic sulphur compounds are desulphurized by contacting the oil in the presence of hydrogen at 600-1000 DEG F. (315-540 DEG C.) with a catalyst containing nickel meta-titanate (NiTiO3) as the essential component. The catalyst is prepared by calcining for more than one hour at 1400 DEG to 2000 DEG F. (700-1095 DEG C.) a mixture of a nickel compound affording an oxide of nickel and a titanium compound affording an oxide of titanium, the mixture containing between 0.5 and 3 atoms of nickel per atom of titanium. Several nickel and titanium compounds are mentioned, the preferred mixture being NiCO3 with TiO2. The calcined catalyst may be used as fragments or may be pulverized and pelleted, e.g. with stearic acid in which case a carrier, e.g. activated alumina or hydrous alumina gel, may be incorporated. When used the catalyst may be regenerated by burning off the carbonaceous deposits with dilute oxygen at temperatures up to 1800 DEG F. (980 DEG C.). The process is particularly suited to olefinic feed stocks since the catalyst preferentially catalyse desulphurization with minimum saturation of olefin content. The desulphurization may take place in the vapour or liquid phase depending on the boiling point of the feed stock (e.g. a naphtha and gas oil respectively). Pressures may range from 100 to 3000 p.s.i.g. and hydrogen may be employed in amounts of 500 to 5000 s.c.f./bbl. oil. The hydrogen may be generated externally or internally as in autofining. Hourly space velocities of 0.5 to 20 vols. oil.vol. catalyst may be used. In examples, nickel meta-titanate prepared by calcining a mixture of 237.4 g. NiCO3 and 79.9 g. TiO2 (2 : 1 molar Ni : Ti) at 1550 DEG F. is contrasted with a mixed catalyst consisting of 74.7 g. NiO and 79.9 g. TiO2 (1 : 1 molar Ni : Ti). Each catalyst is used in the desulphurization of a coke still naphtha at 750 DEG F. (400 DEG C.), and 1000 p.s.i.g. using 2000 s.c.f. H2/bbl. oil and a liquid hourly space velocity of 2.
