Abstract

In a catalytic desulphurization of hydrocarbon mixtures containing alkenes by treatment with a gas containing hydrogen or a compound which yields or transfers hydrogen, the catalyst comprises alumina or bauxite impregnated with an oxide or sulphide of iron, nickel, or cobalt and an oxide or sulphide of chromium, molybdenum, or tungsten, the atomic ratio of the metals of the first group to the metals of the second group lying between 1:20 and 18:20 to which catalyst has been added a small quantity of a salt of an alkali metal. Potassium chloride or nitrate may be used as the alkali metal salt, preferably in a ratio of potassium to the metals of the second group of 0.5:2.0 to 5:2.0. Alumina, which has been activated by heating and treatment with 15 per cent hydrochloric acid, is impregnated with a solution containing cobalt nitrate, ammonium molybdate, and potassium nitrate, pulverized, graphite added, the catalyst made into tabloid form and heated in nitrogen. The oxides may be converted into sulphides by the passage of untreated gasoline at 400 DEG C. To suppress hydrogenation of the alkenes, the catalysts may be heated before use to 700 DEG -800 DEG C for 2-4 hours in air. In examples gasoline fractions obtained by catalytic cracking are treated with hydrogen at 2-50 atmospheres or higher at a temperature of 400 DEG -450 DEG C. Tetra-ethyl lead may be added to the product to increase the octane number.
