Abstract
A catalyst, for the production or purification of hydrocarbons by treatment of carbonaceous material with a gas containing hydrogen or compounds which under the reaction conditions yield or transfer hydrogen, comprises an aluminium oxide carrier impregnated with at least one of the metals iron, cobalt and nickel or a derivative thereof and at least one of the metals chromium, molybdenum and tungsten or a derivative thereof, the atomic ratio of the first metal to the second metal lying between 1 : 20 and 18 : 20. The alkali content of the carrier may be reduced by pretreatment with sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, phosphoric or acetic acid. The catalyst may be prepared by impregnating the carrier with a solution of cobalt nitrate and ammonium molybdate or with an ammonium tungstate solution and then with colbalt nitrate in the correct proportions and drying, pulverizing, pelleting with graphite and then heating to form the oxides. The catalyst may be employed for the hydrogenation, destructive hydrogenation or refining treatment, e.g. desulphurization, of crude mineral oil, liquid products obtained from crude mineral oil, shale, peat, bituminous coal, brown coal or fractions thereof or similar products which have already undergone a thermal or cracking treatment.
