Abstract

Furnace oils, diesel oils, jet fuels or mixtures thereof with minimum formation of gasoline are prepared from hydrocarbon feedstocks containing above 600 p.p.m. by weight of nitrogenous compounds, less than 2 p.p.m. by weight of vanadium and which has a carbon residue below 2% by weight, said feedstock boiling above 343 DEG C., by contacting said feedstock with hydrogen in presence of a nickel-tungsten catalyst composited with a silica-magnesia carrier at 399 DEG to 454 DEG C. at a hydrogen partial pressure of 140 to 245 kg. cm.2, an L.H.S.V. of 0.2 to 10.0 and a hydrogen feed rate of 36 to 530 S.C.M. per 100 litres of feedstock and at a conversion rate per pass of 40 to 65% by volume into lower boiling products. The catalyst used may contain 5 to 40% by weight of nickel plus tungsten and the atomic ratio W: Ni may be 1:0.1 to 1:5. The metals may be present as free metal, oxide or sulphide. The carriers use may contain (a) 60 to 95% by weight, the balance being silica having a surface acidity at 427 DEG C. of 0.05 to 0.15 milli equivalent of NH3 adsorbed per gram of support, (b) 8 to 14% by weight magnesia and a surface acidity at 427 DEG C. of 0.05 to 0.20 milli equivalents of NH3. Starting materials, boiling above 343 DEG C., are petroleum distillates, vacuum gas oil, heavy straight run gas oil and heavy cracked gas oils and the products boil below 343 DEG C. preferably down to 121 DEG C. Products boiling above 343 DEG C. are recycled. Other preferred embodiments are (1) the incorporation of 40 p.p.m. to 2.0% by weight of sulphur into the feedstock using, e.g., butyl mercaptan, thiophene, hydrogen sulphide or carbon disulphide; (2) the incorporation of 0.1 to 5% by weight based on the feedstock, a halogen, e.g. fluorine into the catalyst before use or during reaction by adding fluorine containing compounds to the feedstock in amounts of 1 to 20 p.p.m. and (3) the incorporation into the reactor of 5 p.p.m. to 1.0% by weight water based on the feedstock during the reaction.
