Abstract
Heavy, residual hydrocarbons are converted to gasoline and other products by coking and recovering a gas oil fraction, treating this to reduce the nitrogen content below 10 p.p.m., and contacting together with at least 500 preferably at least 2,000 SCF of hydrogen per barrel with an acidic cracking catalyst having hydrogenating characteristics at 350-700 DEG F. and at least 400 p.s.i.g. to convert at least part to gasoline. The feed, e.g. a reduced crude, is subjected to delayed or fluidised coking. The gas oil may be recovered from the product as two fractions, a heavy and a light gas oil. The former may be subjected to conventional thermal or catalytic cracking to obtain gasoline and heavy and light cycle oils. The heavy cycle oil is used as jet fuel or recycled to the cracking while the light cycle oil is added to the light coker gas oil and the combined feed is denitrified. Alternatively a portion of the heavy gas oil may be recycled to the coking step or passed with the light gas oil to the dinitrification. This latter step is effected by washing with acid, contacting with solid acidic material or, preferably, by hydrofining. The hydrocracking catalyst comprises an acidic cracking catalyst, e.g. SiO2-MgO, SiO2-Al2O3-ZrO2, acid treated clays, synthetic metal alumino-silicates including molecular sieves, synthetic SiO2-Al2O3, Al2O3-AlCl3, fluorided magnesia, aluminium chloride or charcoal, HF-BF3, TiCl3 or AlCl3-hydrocarbon-HCl complexes, together with a hydrogenating component forming 0,1-35% of the catalyst, e.g. a compound of a metal of Group 1B, 2B, 5, 6, 7 or 8 which is not reduced to the metal under reaction conditions such as oxides or sulphides of Mo, W, Cr, Re or Zn and sulphides of Co, N1, Cn or Cd or Co-Cr or Ni-Cr complexes. In the hydrocracking the space velocity may be 0,2-5 and the pressure 400-3,000 p.s.i.g. Product boiling above 400 DEG F. may be recycled or used as jet fuel. Heavy gasoline product from any stage and particularly from the hydrocracking may be catalytically reformed. Specification 917,943 is referred to.
