Abstract

Colloidal rhenium or compounds of rhenium in colloidal form on suitable carriers, together with other metals or compounds brought in known manner in colloidal form on suitable carriers, is used as catalyst in treating carbonaceous materials at high temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen for effecting destructive hydrogenation, for refining or de-sulphurizing petroleum products, asphalts, &c., or for converting phenols, cresols, &c. to hydrocarbons without splitting of the molecules. Carriers specified are oxides, carbides, silicides, carbonates, borates, sulphates, sulphides, active carbon, fine coal, silica gel, pumice. In the example, a light motor oil is heated with hydrogen at 100 atmospheres pressure to 430 DEG C., in the presence of a colloidal rhenium-molybdenum catalyst on active carbon. On release of pressure, 86 per cent of a lubricating oil remains in the autoclave, and the vapours yield 11,5 per cent of distillate; 19 per cent of the total sulphur remains in the liquid products. The catalyst is prepared by adsorbing colloidal molybdenum oxide and colloidal rhenium sulphide respectively on carbon, and 3 parts of the molybdenum mass containing the equivalent of 3,75 grams. MoO3 are used with 2 parts of the rhenium mass containing the equivalent of 0,9 grams ReS2. Specifications 353,506 and 358,180 are referred to.ALSO:Colloidal rhenium or compounds of rhenium in colloidal form on suitable carriers, together with other metals or compounds brought in known manner in colloidal form on suitable carriers, is used as catalyst in treating carbonaceous materials at high temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen for converting phenols, cresols, &c., to hydrocarbons without splitting of the molecules.
