Abstract
Coal and the like carbonaceous materials, asphalts, petroleum products, tars, phenols and the like are treated with hydrogenating gases at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst obtained by treating metal oxides or hydrated metal oxides with sulphuretted hydrogen prior to the hydrogenation treatment. Part of the treatment with sulphuretted hydrogen may be carried out at 200-300 DEG C. The hydrogenation treatment may be such that splitting of the molecules does or does not occur. Examples are given of the preparation of catalysts from cobalt and iron oxides, and of the treatment of brown coal and crude cresols with these.ALSO:Phenols, cresols, and the like are treated with hydrogen, or gases containing or yielding hydrogen, at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst formed by treating metal oxides or hydrated metal oxides with sulphuretted hydrogen prior to the hydrogenation. The treatment with hydrogen sulphide may be carried out, in part, at 200-300 DEG C. The preparation of a catalyst from cobalt oxide, and its use in the production of hydrocarbons from crude cresols, is described.
