Abstract

335,543. Elkington, H. D., (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, (formerly De Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij) . June 24, 1929. Hydrogenation, destructive.-In the destructive hydrogenation of oxygen-containing carbonaceous material, such as coal, brown coal or lignite, cellulose, tars, pitches or petroleum residues, or mixtures of solid carbonaceous material, with liquid oxygen, containing products such as tars, phenols, cresols, &c., the materials are first treated with carbon monoxide or gases containing carbon monoxide, at elevated temperatures and preferably under pressure, thereby removing most of the oxygen prior to subjecting the resultant material to a second and separate treatment in the presence of the hydrogen or of gases consisting substantially of hydrogen. Known catalysts may be employed in both stages and the gases containing carbon monoxide may be water gas or producer gas. Water present in the initial material or formed therefrom during the process may react with the carbon monoxide to form hydrogen which may partially hydrogenate the material; water may be added to bring about this result. When treating coal, lignite and similar material, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide is preferred but tars and other liquid oxygen-containing material may be treated with carbon monoxide alone in the first stage. Volatile products are removed before the material is destructively hydrogenated. The process may be applied to mixtures of coal &c. with such oxygen containing substances as normally require only a one stage treatment, e.g. a mixture of brown coal and phenols, cresols &c., valuable cyclic hydrocarbons being produced in the first stage. In an example, brown coal was heated in an autoclave with a catalyst consisting of a mixture of simultaneouly precipitated ferric and aluminium oxides together with water and a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in equal quantities, the amount of the gases being such as to give an initial pressure of 100 kilograms per square centimeter. The temperature was gradually raised to 460‹ C. whereupon the heating was stopped and the pressure released after the temperature had fallen to 300‹ C. The volatile products were condensed and the residue subjected to destructive hydrogenation. Specification 257,256 is referred to.
