Abstract
255,828. Compagnie de BÚthune. July 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Drawings to Specification. Hydrocarbons; alcohols; oxygenated organic compounds.-Coal distillation gases, which may be partially dehydrogenated, are first passed under pressure and at a high temperature over a metallic oxide catalyst, and then, after cooling and removal of condensible products formed, are sent over a catalyst having a polymerizing and condensing action at normal or increased pressure. The original gases which comprise a mixture of methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide are thereby transformed into alcohols, liquid hydrocarbons, etc. The first stage of the reaction is preferably effected at a temperature of 300-600‹ C., under a pressure of 400 atmospheres and using ferric oxide as catalyst; an aqueous alcohol separates out on cooling. The second stage takes place at a temperature of 100-400‹ C., and over such a catalyst as activated carbon, producing liquid organic compounds, including hydrocarbons. which are immiscible with water.
