Abstract

249,519. Patart, G. March 21, 1925. [Convention date]. Mineral and tar oils, extracting.-In the hydrogenation or the extraction of by-products from organic substances at high temperatures and pressures the gases or liquids or both used are those which are already heated and compressed during industrial exothermic synthesizing operations. Synthesizing operations specified are the manufacture of ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen, of hydrocyanic acid from ammonia and carbon monoxide, of urea from ammonia and carbon dioxide, and of methyl alcohol &c. from hydrogen and carbon oxides. In an example, the mixture of gases and vapours issuing from the last catalysis apparatus in the production of methanol from a mixture of hydrogen and carbon-monoxide is passed upwards through a digester packed with pine wood, while liquid from the condenser of the synthetic methanol plant is passed downwards. The issuing liquid contains methanol, pine oil, acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and acetic acid. The gases contain additional hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, ethylene and its homologues which are condensed upon the catalyser to liquid hydrocarbons as described in Specification 247,178, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. The residue of charcoal may be used to produce the initial mixture of gases for catalytic treatment. In other examples, the gases from the last catalyser in the synthesis of methyl alcohol and hydrocarbons from ethylene, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen at 850 atmos. and 300‹ C. are passed at 430-450‹ C. through heavy petroleum oil, naphthalene, or residues from mineral or vegetable oils whereby the proportion of light oils is increased. Or coal is treated with the gases issuing at 420-450‹ C. and 250 atmospheres from the last catalyser in the synthetic production of oxygenated compounds and hydrocarbons. The proportion of ammonia, tars, and volatile substances of great calorific power in the condensate is increased, while methane and olefins are added to the gases. The proportion of volatile substances may be increased by heating the gases to 750-800‹ C.
