Abstract
Benzines containing sulphur or oxygen compounds, derived, e.g from the destructive hydrogenation or cracking of coal, tar or mineral oils, or petroleum distillates containing sulphur, are rendered non-knocking by first treating preferably in the vapour phase with hydrogen at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of catalysts to remove sulphur and oxygen as hydrogen sulphide and water, and then subjecting the product to a dehydrogenating heat treatment without the addition of hydrogenating gases, under pressure and in the presence of catalysts. In the hydrogenation treatment the pressures may vary from 20 to 300 atmospheres or more and the temperature may be 250 to 430 DEG C., the catalysts being those immune from sulphur poisoning which are employed in destructive hydrogenation, e.g. the oxides or sulphides of metals of the fifth or sixth group of the periodic table. The dehydrogenating treatment may be effected at 450 to 600 DEG C. at pressures similar to the hydrogenating treatment, the catalysts being bauxite, fuller's earth or those used in the hydrogenating treatment. Instead of subjecting the whole of the benzines to the treatment, part only may be so subjected and then mixed with the remainder.
