Abstract

Hydrocarbons of low boiling point are obtained by subjecting tars, crude oils and residuums, coal &c. to the processes described in Specifications 171,367, 171,390, 174,321, 180,625, and 193,922, [all in Class 91, Oils &c.]. The materials are brought in a finely-divided condition at high temperatures in presence of hydrogen, hydrocarbon vapours, or other gas which prevents dehydrogenation into contact with a catalytic material which will not form a carbide, such as a molten metal, other than lead. The materials, if liquid, are sprayed and passed together with hydrogen &c. through the catalyst. In treating producer tar from lignite or coal, the oxygen compounds form phenols or cresols or are converted into lower-boiling oxygen compounds such as acetone &c. and the nitrogen compounds form ammonia, pyridine, &c.ALSO:Solid paraffins may be separated by crystallization from lignite tars &c. before treatment. p
