Abstract

In the conversion of carbonaceous materials, such as coal, tars, mineral and tar oils, &c., into products of lower boiling-point, a colloidal solution or dispersion of a catalyst is employed. The catalyst, e.g. colloidal tin, may be dispersed in the material to be treated and injected with hydrogen into the reaction vessel and subjected to increased temperature and pressure, or a colloidal solution or dispersion of the catalyst may be atomized into the carbonaceous material by means of hydrogen or by hydrogen-containing gases or vapours.
