Abstract

Hydrocarbon material derived from petroleum oil is treated with oxygen at a temperature of 175-400 DEG C. preferably 250-350 DEG C. and then thermally cracked to produce coke. The coke may be converted into moderator graphite. The hydrocarbon material treated may be derived from crude oil by distillation and/or cracking, reforming, desulphurization, alkylation, or polymerization. It may be a "cycle" oil preferably having a boiling range of 300-500 DEG C. or a heavy bottom product of the distillation of a thermally reformed naphtha. The oxygen may be pure or in the form of air. 50-175 gm. of oxygen per kg. of hydrocarbon material may be used. The oxidation treatment may be at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 2-5 atmos. abs. Coking may be effected by passing the oxygen-treated material, optionally diluted with nitrogen, through a fluidised bed of carbon particles, at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, e.g. up to 4 atmos. abs. and a temperature of 450-650 DEG C. for a contact time of 5-60 secs. The resulting coke may be calcined in a rotary kiln at a temperature of 1100-1400 DEG C. After grinding and sifting the calcined coke may be mixed with a binder and graphitised. The binder may be coal tar pitch or hydrocarbon starting material.
