Abstract

270,314. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. May 1, 1926, [Convention date]. Hydrocarbons, cracking; hydrogenation, destructive.-In cracking hydrocarbons as described in Specification 268,796, the reaction is carried out in the absence of any metals and in the presence of non-metallic catalysts which do not give rise to the deposition of carbon, especially oxygen compounds, e.g. oxides of metals of the 3rd-6th groups of the periodic system, or of iron, nickel, and cobalt. The treatment may take place under reduced or elevated pressure, and inert or reducing gases or steam may be passed through the apparatus. A producer tar of which 20 per cent distils below 300‹ C. is passed through a silica brick column charged with cobalt oxide " permutit " or uranium oxide " permutit " and heated to 500‹ C. and a product is obtained of which 40 per cent distils below 300‹ C. In a further example, molybdic acid in the form of lumps is introduced into an enamelled still charged with crude Panuco mineral oil. Specification 27387/11 also is referred to.
