272,556. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. June 14, 1926, [Convention date]. Hydrogenation, destructive. - In the destructive hydrogenation of coaly materials, oils, tars, bitumens &c. under pressure and at elevated temperatures preferably in the presence of catalysts, an improved yield of low boiling-point hydrocarbons is obtained by circulating in a closed circuit a large excess of hydrogenating gases through the reaction vessel so as to keep the partial pressure of the products below 10 per cent of the total pressure. Crude mineral oil is atomized by a heated current of hydrogen in a vertical reaction vessel lined with aluminium and is passed at 475‹ C. under a pressure of 200 atmospheres over a catalyst composed of molybdenum and chromium oxides. The injected quantity of preheated crude oil is regulated so that 1 cubic metre of cooled product is obtained whilst 150,000 cubic meters of hydrogenating gas are being circulated. The product contains about 60 per cent benzine. Specification 174,321 is referred to.
