Abstract

273,337. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. June 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Hydrogenation, destructive. - Liquid hydrocarbons of low boiling point are obtained from coals, mineral oils, bitumens, &c. by first obtaining from these materials fractions with narrow ranges of boiling point and then subjecting the fractions to destructive hydrogenation at high temperatures and under at least 50 atmospheres pressure preferably in the presence of catalysts. If solid materials are used they are first converted to liquid form by destructive distillation, low temperature carbonization &c. and the liquids are then separated into the required fractions. Middin fractions boiling between 250 and 350‹ C. are especially suitable and hydrogenation is obtained by passing these fractions mixed with hydrogen over porous charcoals, active silica and hydro silicates, or contact materials as described in Specification 247,583, 251,264, and 258,272.
