Hydrocarbons.-The polymerization of ethylene to obtain liquid hydrocarbons is effected by means of dark or silent electric discharges at ordinary or raised temperature, with or without the use of catalysts. The product contains both saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons from which fractions suitable for motor fuel and lubricating oil can be obtained. The residual gas contains hydrogen and may be used to saturate the unsaturated hydrocarbons in presence, of catalysts as part. of a continuous process.
