Abstract
The catalytic treatment of carbonaceous materials in presence of hydrogenating gases, e.g. destructive hydrogenation, the hydrogenation purification of mineral oils, and the hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, is carried out in presence of a catalyst comprising iron sulphide which has been produced prior to the reaction by treatment at elevated temperatures of iron sulphide with sulphur or volatile sulphur compounds under pressure. Iron sulphide which has been produced by precipitation from an iron chloride solution with aqueous ammonium sulphide solution is packed in lump form into a reaction vessel and treated for 1--1,5 hours with hydrogen sulphide under a pressure of 3 atmos. and at 200 DEG C. Hydrogen mixed with gas oil vapours is led at 200 atmos. and 470 DEG C., over the catalyst thus obtained and a product is obtained containing 37 per cent hydrocarbons boiling up to 180 DEG C. The product may be recycled.
