Abstract

In destructively hydrogenating carbonaceous materials or purifying oils by treatment with hydrogen, in the presence of catalysts subject to sulphur poisoning, the poisoned catalyst is removed at intervals and replaced by fresh. The poisoned catalyst may be regenerated. Oil is mixed in a stirring vessel 3 with a catalyst and passed through a preheater 7 and heating coil 9 to a reaction vessel 11. Hydrogen may be passed in to the coil 9 or through the sprayer 14. Vaporous products are condensed in the usual manner and the hydrogen is purified and re-cycled. Liquid is withdrawn by a pipe 24 and passed to a filter or other separator 27 which removes the catalyst and delivers it by means of a transporter A to a roasting furnace 31 where it is revivefied by oxidizing gases. The purified catalyst passes to the mixer 3. Suitable catalysts are copper, zinc, nickel, iron, cobalt or their oxides. Instead of roasting the catalyst, it may be dissolved in acids and <PICT:0377938/III/1> precipitated. In an alternative process, the catalyst is used in fixed form in the reaction vessel; when it is poisoned, the flow of oil is diverted into a second chamber with fresh catalyst. The catalyst may be regenerated in the first chamber without removal. The process is suitable for producing lubricating oils and purifying naphthas and kerosenes.
