Abstract

Tar oils are hydrogenated at ordinary pressure and elevated temperature using coke oven gas from which the water vapour has been removed. The coke oven gas is dehydrated by cooling, by calcium chloride or preferably by means of sulphuric acid, whilst the water formed during the reaction is vaporized at the temperature of the hydrogenation, viz. 180-200 DEG C., and carried away by the gas. The tar oils are previously desulphurized in known manner with ferrous sulphate or bog iron ore. An example is given of the hydrogenation of desulphurized tar oil in the presence of a colloidal nickel catalyst. The product may be treated at a temperature of 180-200 DEG C. with superheated steam to deprive it of its odour and colour. Specification 18998/12 is referred to.ALSO:Tar oils are hydrogenated at ordinary pressure and elevated temperature using coke oven gas from which the water vapour has been removed. The tar oils are previously desulphurized in known manner with ferrous sulphate or Rasen iron ore. An example is given of the hydrogenation of desulphurized tar fat oil in the presence of a colloidal nickel catalyst. The product may be treated at a temperature of 180-200 DEG C. with superheated steam to deprive it of its odour and colour. Specification 18998/12, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.
