Abstract

Oils resembling petroleum are obtained by distilling from copper, cast-iron or sheet-iron boilers, fatty acids, or animal, fish, or vegetable oils, or other glycerides mixed with one or more metal oxides or one or more metal chlorides or a mixture acting as a dehydrating and polymerizing agent, followed or not by similar treatment with zinc chloride or other of the above substances more active as a polymerizing agent. Suitable chlorides and oxides are zinc chloride, calcium chloride, barium chloride, strontium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, tin chloride, quicklime, barium oxide, and strontium oxide. The operation may be conducted under a pressure of several atmospheres. Reaction commences at 350-450 DEG C., and the temperature is preferably raised to 500 DEG C. The condensate is separated from water, neutralized by washing with dilute soda and water, and fractioned. The still-residue is treated with superheated steam or a solvent to remove heavy oils, and then with water to dissolve out the metal oxide or chloride for reuse. The residual carbon may be used to produce water-gas, which may be mixed with the reaction gases consisting of hydrogen, hydrogen chloride, and carbon oxides and used to heat the boilers.
